Tuesday, September 19, 2000 - Possible Vote on H-1B's in Senate this week
Senator Trent Lott (R-MS), the Republican Majority Leader, moved to bring to a vote on the Senate floor S. 2045, the Hatch-Abraham H-1B bill.
This vote, on how to proceed on this issue, is expected to take place Tuesday (9/19/00), with a Senate vote on the H-1B bill itself, as well as H-1B related amendments, expected shortly thereafter.
The vote, as crafted by Senator Lott, will permit no consideration of the Latino and Immigrant Fairness Act (S. 2912) measures: restoration of Section 245(i) , NACARA parity, and registry date update.
It is expected that a majority in the Senate will support S. 2045.
Most Democrats are expected to support the measure, while protesting that they were not given the opportunity to vote on the Latino and Immigrant Fairness issues which merit support because they are both pro-family and as critical to our economy as are H-1B visas.
If S. 2045 passes the Senate, it then would go to the House. House Republican leadership would need to decide whether they will directly take up S. 2045 for a vote.
